Preventative ways to keeping your fireplace operating safley. First you should select the proper size
grate. Make sure your grate is a few inches shorter than the opening dimensions. When placing the
grate in your fire box place it as close to the back wall as possible and a few inches from the front
opening. This will aid in the draft. If the grate is too close to the opening smoke could roll into your

Select the proper firewood. A good well seasoned hardwood should be the first choice. Firewood
rating chart will show you the best ones. If you live in an area where select hardwoods are not availble
you should consider a cresote remover. Periodically a creosote remover should be added to the fire.
This will make the chimney easier to clean.
